be a host: info
Become a Trivia Host!
- Are you an outgoing person looking for a fun, part time position that hardly feels like working? Want to get regular experience speaking in front of a crowd, tap into your inner-nerd, and try your hand at DJing too?
- As a TriviaTryst Trivia Host, you'll have the opportunity to work 1 to 3 nights a week at bars and restaurants, meeting new people and in many cases, enjoying free drinks compliments of the house. You'll be in charge of setting up at the bar, hosting a live, gameshow-style trivia contest on the microphone, keeping score, and presenting prizes to teams.
- Starting pay is competitive, and as your events become more successful you can earn more based on popularity of the event. The timing for a typical event is from about 8:00-10:30 in the evening. The job involves reading from a script, but the best hosts add color with their own personality.
- The most successful hosts are:
- Personable - Socially savvy, able to quickly meet & connect with new people
- Socially Assertive - Can assert control over drunk/flirtatious (and occasionally argumentative) bar patrons
- Have an "Inner Nerd" - Can pronounce occasional foreign and academic terms and nuance questions intelligently
- Have a Good Sense of Humor - Are able to improvise jokes based on situations that arise
- Depending on your location, owning or having access to a car may be a necessity. You must also have your own laptop to bring to events -- all other equipment and training is provided.
- Locations currently in greatest need of hosts include:
- Hoboken/Jersey City, NJ
- Fairfield County, CT
- Central Long Island, NY
- Washington, DC Metro
- If you're interested, send an email explaining why you are a good fit for the job of Trivia Host. If possible, attach a photo and resume highlighting your experience speaking/performing in front of a crowd. Be sure to mention your location and how far you are willing to travel to events. Even if you don't live in NYC or one of the locations listed above, that's ok (we are expanding rapidly and considering events in other areas). If selected, we'll contact you to set up an interview.
